Posted by on May 7, 2015 in Book, Domestic Violence | 0 comments

Only 4 weeks until our inaugural Sampling of Hope event for Safehouse Denver! A lot of team energy has gone into putting this event together. Our tireless leader Shannon (Annual Giving and Events Manager) has worked her tail off. I serve on another committee and when they told us about the new event, I got excited. Anything to raise funds for our Extended Stay program. I love volunteering for causes which are part of my life journey. Let me tell you about Anna. She was a career woman I met while in shelter that couldn’t get away from her controlling boyfriend. Anna was sweet and motherly to...

How to give grace

Posted by on Apr 21, 2015 in Book, Domestic Violence | 1 comment

Grace is sometimes a foreign concept to me. There are times I don’t know how to give it or receive it. Lately I’ve been struggling with how to give grace to others. It’s been very hard to start this site and write chapters about my dv story and not have the support of my parents since they play a part in the story. That has been my saving grace and way of giving back. Safehouse Denver has been where I’ve channeled my...

Light snow fell over the city as the Yellow Cab came to a stop at Safehouse Denver’s Emergency Shelter. A young woman and small girl stepped onto the sidewalk and into the welcoming arms of a Domestic Violence Advocate and the promise of safety inside. Anne had left her violent husband and was deeply concerned for her daughters safety. Anne and Sophie were two of the 30 residents at Safehouse over the 2013 holiday season. Anne is now working full-time and Sophie is a loving, well-adjusted kindgarten. Their story is very similar to many other women and children during the holiday season....

Domestic Violence Awareness month

Posted by on Oct 26, 2014 in Book, Domestic Violence | 0 comments

Today is the start of Domestic Violence Awareness month. The goal is to bring awareness and help end domestic violence. Understanding the basics and helping to break the cycle of abuse is greatly needed in this country and around the world. My Story My story started innocently and built slowly before turning violent. Seth was easy to talk to, pleasant to be around and very charming.  Our first date was seven hours because he wanted to get to know me. It gives you a glimpse of how an abusive person can wield their way into someone’s life. It would take a year and a half before my then...
