Coming Back to CO and Getting Involved

Coming back to Colorado was never in my plans. In fact I used the ‘never’ several times. All of the bad things in my life have happened here and I wanted a fresh start elsewhere. It’s so ironic in 2012, my husband decided he wanted to move out here. We could live anywhere with our jobs and he was like ‘Why not?’ I was like ‘Why?’ So we packed up in 2012 and moved to Denver.

Getting Involved

Like other places I’ve lived, I actively got involved in helping women at different domestic abuse shelters. It has been my saving grace and way of giving back. Safehouse Denver has been where I’ve channeled my time and it’s been rewarding.

The last few weeks we’ve been gearing up for Safehouse Denvers’ Sampling of Hope event. It’s been exciting to be a part of it and start working on marketing. The event will help to fund the extended stay program allowing women and children to have a place to stay beyond their 30 days at shelter. It will give refuge to many families needing it during difficult times.

I thought about what I went through during the time I stayed in a shelter. Had very little clothes, no food, but grateful for the roof over my head. However, I had also lost dignity, some personal identity and value. The women who need this program have lost similar things such as food, clothing and dignity. Most are far worse off than I ever was. Our hope is people will come be a part of this event to give back to these families.

Being a part of this event and serving at Safehouse, helps to heal old wounds, but also help hurting women and children not be stripped of basic essentials. If you are in the Denver area June 4th and would like to come eat and drink from some great restaurants like LaLa’s and Denver Chophouse, tickets go on sale April 6th. We hope to see you there!
